http://www.opb.org/programs/ofg/videos/view/246-Big-Horn-Pneumonia

I suggest you read a little more about your claim. Most rational people without some kind of monetary agenda know that there is a very strong connection between contact with domestic sheep and pneumonia die-offs in bighorn sheep populations. That is why there is a BLM policy, which is rarely followed, which calls for maintaining a 8.5 mile separation between domestic sheep and bighorn. WAFWA suggests this separation as well. It's just the woolgrowers who don't like to acknowledge this and I submit it is motivated by the fact that they don't want to give up their public land welfare ranching.

What is your evidence/motivation for making this claim? $?

I also don't think you have a very good understanding of science. The goal of science is to disprove something rather than prove something. Can you disprove that domestic sheep diseases are passed to bighorn sheep, which have no immunity to them, and thus are killed. If you can I would really like to hear your argument and the evidence you have to back it up.

You only have to cook your meat and it will be killed. 140° is all it takes. If you don't want to get brucellosis don't eat raw meat or unpasteurized milk.

If you get it in this day and age then you're not paying attention to what you are doing.

If it is such a health risk then why are so many buffalo slaughtered then sent into the food supply without any testing at all? You sound like you are pretty ignorant about what is actually happening.

Also, just because a person may, in very rare circumstances get brucellosis, does that mean that an entire species should be persecuted and eradicated from its native habitat?

I say bullshit.

In connection with what's been happening - and if you could help us get word out we'd appreciate it - we're organizing an event in Bozeman on March 26 featuring Mike Mease and a film by BFC. This is an attempt to organize grassroots solidarity support in Bozeman for buffalo and other local issues.

It would take a change of the rules governing transport of animals from a brucellosis infected herd. Currently it is illegal to transport these animals across state lines. Two years ago APHIS/Homeland Security agents escorted trailers full of buffalo to slaughter all the way to Nampa, Idaho. There are even APHIS agents escorting them to slaughter houses in Montana this year.

I would like to see these rules changed but I doubt that they will because the livestock lobby controls wildlife too and they won't let it happen. I guess Brucellosis is only dangerous in Montana since they don't seem to be too concerned with it in Idaho or Wyoming and they don't seem to be concerned about feeding it to people. If it were truly dangerous the meat would be destroyed and not given to food banks.

It is possible for people to contract brucellosis but it is very rare because of milk pasteurization which used to be the main way that it was given to humans. It is still possible to contract it through an open cut if someone comes in direct contact with infected birthing materials or reproductive tissues.

Buffaloed,

There is a Comanche Nationals Grasslands Park on the eastern plains of Colorado. It consists of about 1/2 million acres. It is a perfect habitat for wild buffalo. Could some of them that are slated for slaughter be sent there instead? What would it take to see this happen?
